It’s hard to get in front of the camera. We’re not 16 anymore. We’re not the same size we were before we had kids and there’s barely enough time in the morning to feed the kids, let alone get some makeup on and do your hair properly so you feel more like a human being and less like a frumpy mummy.
But here’s what I have learnt since joining my love of photography with motherhood…. Kids don’t care what you look like!
They love you no matter what you look like, what you are wearing or how messy your mum bun is that day. And let’s face it, while they are young anyway, they are THE BEST teachers at not caring what other people think about them.
So here are 5 Things Your Kids Can Teach You About Being In The Photo!
#1. They LOVE you no matter what you look like, what you wear or how your hair is done! Very important point to reiterate – It had to be number ONE!
#2. Take a photo of yourself with something that you’re proud of. Kids always want their photo taken when they have made something, built something, drawn something or achieved something. Why shouldn’t you?!
#3. Kids laugh and play everyday around us and we are always trying to take photos of them to try and capture that memory, so we will have it forever. We know how much they love to play, but they love it even more when you play with them. So how much more meaningful are those photos if you are in them playing together with your kids. Capturing a time when they DID want to play with you. A time where they loved you and thought you were the only person in the world! And all you had to do was play with them (and hand the camera to someone else, hey or even just set the timer!)
#4. You still have that inner girl inside you!
She’s there. She used to laugh and run and play and not care about the world around, just like your kids do now. Find her again, and let her be in the photos with your kids.
Think more about the memories you will have, than the colour of your hair. Think about the moments you will have to show your grandkids, rather than the way you looked in jeans.
Because when it’s all said and done, it’s not what your children remember and it’s not how your children see you and if you don’t believe me, the last thing your children can teach you is ……
#5. See yourself just as they see you! The best thing you can learn from your kids, is how to see yourself as they see you. In a photo, in the mirror or just in everyday life. They don’t see your weight or your clothes or that grey hair that has started to appear, they only see the beautiful mumma who they love more than anything else. And if you don’t believe me…just ask them!
And Have Fun!
